What's new at AzTechSoft.com

It's summer, and things can get a bit hectic. Here's a synopsis of the pandemonium:
bulletFinishing the latest release of GPS2CAD has been a major effort
bulletGPS2CAD is now available for download at Download.com. We recently added this as a distribution site
bulletWe are now signed up as an official vendor for the State of Texas

Our plans for the rest of the summer include

bulletTaking GPS2CAD into the .Net platform
bulletMaking improvements to our website www.AzTechSoft.com

We received an excellent testimonial from Bardell Mangum, RLA:

"I am a landscape architect for the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks. We are responsible for design and construction projects on 43 state parks, over 320 fishing access sites, several wildlife management areas and several fish hatcheries. With sites spread across the fourth largest state in the nation, I have been looking for a product to improve my efficiency in conceptual site design. I've found it. GPS2CAD allows me to do conceptual site design on the ground where it should be done. Your product efficiently fills the niche between project scoping and detailed construction surveys. Today I upgraded to GPS2CAD 3.0 and I am amazed at the improvements. I look forward to my next project so that I can use it."

Thanks, Bardell! You can see other reports at http://www.aztechsoft.com/Testimonials.htm

The Latest News about GPS2CAD
The latest version of GPS2CAD (ver 3.1) has been released. It is a no-cost upgrade for existing owners of Version 3.0, and the biggest change for this version is compatibility with Magellan GPS. In a nutshell, the changes in this version include:
bulletCompatibility with Magellan GPS (Meridian and SportTrack lines)
bullet3D Plotting for points and blocks
bulletA button to Sort the points in the grid
bulletA check box to control AutoCAD zooms and regens when capturing points real time
bulletFixed some errors (ok, we're not perfect)
         *  Altitude reporting in the grid
         * Tab control error during installation
         * .dxf export/cancel error
         * program fault when exporting .dxf files to a file name in use

What comes next for GPS2CAD?

After the release of Version 3.1, we will begin working on taking GPS2CAD into the .Net platform. This environment is now reaching a solid maturity in industry, and offers a great deal of opportunity for new features and greater functionality. We hope to have this version available in 4th Quarter of this year.

Using GPS2CAD

Does GPS2CAD plot in 3d?

In our last newsletter, the answer was no. However we are now glad to report that the answer is YES. The  program now plots both points and blocks in 3D if this option is selected in the Setup. Lines are not plotted in 3D because the program uses lightweight polylines, which do not have a separate z elevation for each vertex.

You should still be aware that although many (usually older or less expensive) GPS units show the elevation on their screen, it is not recorded in their data base. A way to check this is go into the waypoint list of the GPS and work through the menu as if you were going to edit the point info. If you don't see an elevation, it's because it's not in the database. So when GPS2CAD downloads the points, it inserts a 0 for elevation.

Using GPS2CAD without GPS or CAD

It sounds like an oxymoron, but you can use GPS2CAD without hooking up a GPS unit, or even having AutoCAD on your computer. In fact we do it frequently for testing or demonstration purposes, and even for Tech Support calls. Here's how:

bulletStart GPS2CAD

bulletFrom the Drop down menu, go to Maps/Show Maps only/Aerial

bulletFrom the blank Aerial map screen, select the Zoom To button to bring up the "Zoom To" window
bulletIn the lower half Zoom To Coordinate, enter the desired coordinates, and press GO
bulletThe map will be displayed centered on the coordinate entered

Now add points:
bulletClick the Add Points button on the toolbar
bulletEnter the name information you want to use
bulletHover over the picture and click the desired location
bulletContinue clicking to add points

bulletSwitch back to the main grid window to view the points entered!
bulletThese points can now be exported, saved to a text file, plotted in AutoCAD or uploaded to your GPS unit.

Our Favorite GPS (for now)

While working on the Magellan interface, the Magellan Meridian Gold was used extensively, and showed itself to be an excellent unit. It has a good solid look and feel, smooth operation and very usable screen. The mapping features are very usable, and the screen is a bit larger than many competitors, particularly the Garmin eTrex line.

Geocaching.com One of the premier sites for the sport of "Geocaching". Work is good, but with all the new electronic toys these days, we need to find some time for play, and this is a perfect solution. At this website you can learn how to use your GPS unit for electronic "treasure hunting".

GPSWorld An excellent printed magazine all about  GPS. We get it here in the office, and read it regularly. The best part is that for those in the industry, it's FREE!

The pick for a favorite site is www.GISuser.com This site is an excellent portal for the GIS industry. Launched several months ago, GISuser.com has rapidly become a must-see resource for GIS end users and professionals. The site has been conceived and developed by the publishers of The American Surveyor
Magazine (print pub) and long-time GIS industry media veteran Glenn Letham.

Visitors will find a fresh site with loads of daily updates, most noteworthy being news announcements, a daily spotlight feature, special feature articles, job announcements, RFPs and tender notices, free tools
and scripts, and a very comprehensive GIS data catalog or pointers to free data resources. The site boasts a popular weekly newsletter that nicely summarizes the site's most recent additions (tough to keep up with as there's so much added every day) and is currently offering people who subscribe a chance to win some great prizes in a random draw (software, a graphics card, GITA industry market research report)

Key features of the site:
- Free Job & RFP posting
- Free news release posting for companies seeking PR help
- huge collection of data links and pointers to free scripts, tools, and utilities
- online discussion forums
- webmapping gallery
- informative newsletter

If you need a concise resource for the GIS industry, www.GISuser.com  is an excellent site!

Find a Resource/Link your site

AzTechSoft maintains an extensive and well organized link site where you can find a resource or publicize your own site. It is dedicated to the Architectural, Engineering, and technical communities, and we don't take links outside of that. If you'd like to view it, click here, and to list your own site, click here. It's so popular we're running behind in adding the links, but if it qualifies, we'll get it listed!
